How to Calculate VAT (TVA) in France
The Value Added Tax (VAT), known as Taxe sur la Valeur Ajoutée (TVA) in France, is a consumption tax added to almost all goods and services sold. For consumers, prices are displayed inclusive of tax (TTC - Toutes Taxes Comprises). For businesses, prices are managed net of tax (HT - Hors Taxes). Knowing how to convert between the two is vital for commerce.
French VAT Rates for 2026
The VAT percentage depends on the type of product or service sold in France:
- Standard Rate (20%): Applies to the majority of goods and services (e.g., consumer goods, electronics, clothing, vehicles, alcohol, and professional services).
- Intermediate Rate (10%): Applies to restaurant meals, passenger transport, hotel accommodation, and home renovation work on buildings older than two years.
- Reduced Rate (5.5%): Applies to basic foodstuffs, water, books, tickets for cultural events, and energy-saving home renovations.
- Super-Reduced Rate (2.1%): Reserved for prescription medications covered by social security and newspapers/press publications.
How to Calculate VAT
1. Converting Net (HT) to Gross (TTC)
To find the final price including tax:
Price (TTC) = Price (HT) × (1 + VAT Rate % / 100)
For the standard 20% rate, multiply the HT price by 1.20.
2. Converting Gross (TTC) to Net (HT)
To extract the base price excluding tax (known as reverse VAT calculation):
Price (HT) = Price (TTC) / (1 + VAT Rate % / 100)
For the standard 20% rate, divide the TTC price by 1.20.
3. Finding the Total VAT Amount
VAT Amount = Price (TTC) - Price (HT)
